English I

The OWL at Purdue

Purdue University's Online Writing Lab (OWL) explains the writing process in general, along with the different types of writing, like scientific, technical, creative, literary analysis, job applications, etc. It also reviews the ins and outs of grammar and writing mechanics.

Learning Objectives: Develop writing skills by planning, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing eight essays of no less than 2 pages (12-point type, single-space) using word processor for all stages of writing.
Learning Objectives: Edit writing to combine sentences for style and conciseness; edit for more effective language (active verbs and vibrant descriptors); revise to include more detail and more showing rather than telling sentences; identify irrelevant sentences or select those which support topic sentences and paragraph coherence.

World History Sources
This site provides excellent sources for Finding Historical Documents, and gives guidance on Unpacking Evidence and Analyzing Documents. For parents and other teachers, the site also offers Teaching Sources that outline case studies to help them discuss how to use primary sources for investigating history and describing the past. This site can be especially useful for high school students in exploring U.S. and World history topics, while honing their research and writing skills.

Learning Objectives: Research Skills — Research a topic of personal interest, collect and synthesize data from at least 10 sources including library, web sites, and agencies and organize data using a formal three layer outline in traditional and technical format (I A 1 or 1.1.1); complete a formal research paper of 5-10 pages using APA or MLA citation style.
